Some settlers in the New World felt that England ignored their ideas and concerns. In 1775, the colonies went to war with England. On July 4th, 1776, the Declaration of Independence was signed. In 1783, the Revolutionary War finally ended. The new United States wasn't quite strong enough to make the British leave Michigan. They finally surrendered their forts to the Americans in 1796. The British retook two forts during the War of 1812, but only held them for a year.
There were no major Revolutionary War battles fought in Michigan. However, the British used their fort at Detroit to give supplies to the Indians who were helping them fight the Indians.
